What is Tween Animation Theory?

The word “tween” is derived from “between.” The term comes from traditional animation, where the work is split between keyframes and tween frames. On the Timeline, a designer can define keyframes, and tell Flash to do the mundane work of tweening between them.

Inbetweening or tweening is a key process in all types of animation, including computer animation. It is the process of generating intermediate frames between two images, called key frames, to give the appearance that the first image evolves smoothly into the second image.

What is tweening What are the different types of tweening?

What is a tween? Well, a tween in Adobe Flash is basically an animation command. It allows the animator to animate an object without drawing all of the individual frames of a traditional animation.

There are three types of tweens in Adobe Flash CS4-

Classic tween - Classic Tweens are used to transition between two symbol states. In other words, you may have a symbol at stage left, at frame one, and the same symbol at stage right at frame 20. Once you apply a Classic Tween, the object gradually moves from left to right over 20 frames.

Classic tweens are an older way of creating animation in Animate. These tweens are similar to the newer motion tweens, but are more complicated to create and less flexible. However, classic tweens do provide some types of control over animation that motion tweens do not.

Shape tween - In shape tweening, you draw a vector shape at one specific frame in the Timeline, and change that shape or draw another shape at another specific frame. Animate then interpolates the intermediate shapes for the frames in between, creating the animation of one shape morphing into another.

When to use

For example, you would use shape tweens to make a circle turn into a square, or make a line wiggle. Note: Shape tweens do not share the concept of property keyframes or object-based tweening. A shape tween creates an animation by interpolating between two separate shapes that are each on keyframes.

Motion tweenis nothing but tweening a Symbol's movement from one position to another. To implement Motion Tween all that you have to do is, provide Flash with Symbol's initial position and the end position. Rest is taken care by Flash.

A motion tween is a type of Flash-generated animation in CS6 that requires the use of symbols and is best for creating movement, size, and rotation changes, fades, and color effects.

Differences between Classic Tween, Shape Tween, Motion Tween

Before Flash CS4 there were motion tweens and shape tweens—but CS4 introduces classic tweens. A shape tween is a transformation tween, while motion tweens and classic tweens affect position and rotation.

Tweens, Defined

A motion tween animates symbols moving in space; when you create a motion tween, click on any frame in the tween, move the symbol on that frame, and watch Flash automatically build a motion path animating the frames between that frame and the next keyframe. Any frame where you've manually moved the tweened symbol becomes a keyframe.

Shape tweens, on the other hand, perform distortions on non-symbol shapes and vector graphics. If you create one shape on one keyframe and another shape on another keyframe, connect those two shapes with a shape tween. The tween will perform whatever calculations and morphs needed to transform the first shape into the second.

A classic tween works the way motion tweens used to, in versions CS3 and earlier. In this kind of motion tween, you'd have to manually create all your keyframes and connect all of them with motion tweens that followed point A to point B.

In Adobe Animate, motion tweens superseded classic tweens; classic tweens persisted for backward compatibility and were renamed. In essence, the motion tweens of CS3 became the classic tweens of CS4, with CS4 introducing several substantial modifications to how this type of animation functions.

Tweening in CSS

Filling in the gaps is known as “in-betweening,” or “tweening,” a familiar term for those used to animating in Flash. With CSS animation, we typically use the latter, pose to pose. That is, we'll add keyframes of action, and then the browser will “tween” the intermediate frames automatically.

What is tweening unity?

Tweening provides a limited form of animation, in that it is not a full keyframe animation system. It allows linear interpolation between two values while modifying the interpolation time with one of several predefined function. Tweening is usually used to add little flourishes of animation to a game.

Morphing and Tweening are two techniques of effecting changes in an object and its motion. Tweening enables graphic designer to allow for changes in animated character and also its size, color and location. Tweening has become an integral part of animation using flash as the tool.

Difference between Tween Animation and Frame-by-Frame Animation

Tween Animation: An animation that performs transitions such as rotating, fading, moving, and stretching on a graphic. Frame by Frame Animation: An animation that shows a sequence of images in order (like a film).
